Thousands of boys leaving Primary schools with a reading age of seven

Government figures obtained by the BBC Radio programme Today show that thousands of eleven year old boys are leaving primary school with a reading age of a seven year old. Michael Gove’s suggests a series of changes to improve this figure including; additional resources, teaching synthetic phonics, a reading MOT for six year olds and sacking Head Teachers of failing schools.

Mike Welsh of the National Association of Head teachers, commenting on the Today programme felt that these figures partly reflected children with special needs, and also children who may not be receiving the support for reading practice from home.

The question is ‘how do we help our children become competent readers?’

I came across an article recently from the RFB&D association in the USA which may suggest one possible solution.  This teacher made effective use of audio books to encourage her pupils reading and to raise attainment.  Her results have been wonderful.

I would like to add another thought to this use of audio books. Children need lots of home support when learning to read and if parents struggle to do this, then surely audio books could provide that bridge.  Children and parents can listen and share the book together. Link these audio books to technology i.e. MP3 players and all of this strikes a familiar note with today’s children.

Snowy StoryPhones

StoryPhones, along with the rest of the country has struggled on through the snow this week. Well done to everyone who has managed to get into work or school.  We are based in County Durham and have seen a lot of the cold, white stuff this week.  However, these are the views from our office window, so there are compensations.  Ducks apparently don’t feel the cold which is probably just as well.  Some snowy StoryPhones activities will be posted soon.

Another Gold for StoryPhones

Having won two Gold Awards at last year’s Practical Pre School Awards we were delighted to win another gold award at this September’s Awards.  With a score of 91.5% the judges felt that ‘the Little Listener was a robust, easy to use player just the right size for little hands and the children all enjoyed listening to songs and stories’.

The Little Listener is our latest product.  It is a rugged, easy to use loud speaking and recording MP3 player, ideal for little people and the big ones too.  We want to make listening as easy as possible and our Practical Pre School Gold Award judged by children and practitioners shows that our Little Listener does just that.

The Little Listener is accompanied by the StoryPhones software, an audio management tool as well as a media player.  Our customers can also access our growing online download store.

TES Education Show 2010 – London

Having travelled north last week, this time we headed south to Olympia for the TES Education Show 2010.  Thank you to everyone who visited us.  We really enjoy meeting new visitors to our stand and got a fantastic response to our MP3 players.  We were also able to tell everyone the news that our new product, the Little Listener, our loud speaking MP3 player had received a Practical Pre School Gold Award.

The feedback from our existing customers was brilliant.  The most popular comment was ‘the children are loving them’. We are always delighted to hear this since this has always been our aim with StoryPhones, to make listening easy for children and to open up the world of audio.

Eleanor, one of our directors also lead one of the free workshops.  The basic message was ‘Think Audio’ or how can you use technology to make audio resources a regular part of a child’s learning environment – easy with digital technology. Thank you to everyone who attended.

We now have a quiet time back in the office until BETT 2011.

Scottish Learning Festival 2010 – Glasgow

Once again we had a warm welcome in Glasgow at the Scottish Learning Festival.  Thank you to everyone who visited our stand.  We met lots of new people and enjoyed talking to our existing customers.  All the feedback tells us that their children are enjoying using StoryPhones and having fun listening to stories and music.

This year we had our new product available to order.  The Little Listener, a listen out loud MP3 player ideal for very young children and the not so young! We were also able to tell everyone how much our download store had grown since 2009.  We have hundreds of titles available and you can now order hard copies of books and resources to accompany the downloads.

We will definitely be back next year and look forward to meeting everyone again.
